While many children attend summer camp, not many have a chance to have fun while helping others.

For the fourth year in a row, Kids Korps will offer children and teens an opportunity to volunteer through week-long summer camps in collaboration with the Rancho Santa Fe Community Center and the La Colonia Community Center in Solana Beach. More than 120 children and 60 teen counselors will have the chance to participate in 6 separate week-long camps. Kids Korps campers will give back to their communities with hands-on involvement through active volunteerism. Activities include: volunteering at the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy and Batiquitos Lagoon learning about the natural habitat while removing invasive plants, reading to Head Start pre-schoolers, assembling food packages at the San Diego Food Bank, making blankets with seniors for foster children, painting posters for upcoming breast cancer walks, writing letters to the troops in Iraq and building bikes for low-income children.

Children have an innate need to give to others and Kids Korps gives them a chance to do so. It also teaches them about community needs and how citizens of all ages can help meet these needs.

Kids Korps strives to build character traits in our young people that are essential to personal integrity. Young people will gain a sense of self purpose and responsibility. Through group interaction and teamwork, Kids Korps volunteers will develop initiative, resourcefulness, and a feeling of empowerment leading to a strong sense of accomplishment.
