Green Scene 2009 News Release
SAN DIEGO TEENS PLAN ENVIRONMENTAL CELEBRATION AT STARBUCKS FIRST COUNTY LEED CERTIFIED LOCATION
Green Korps Fest sponsored by SDG&E is an educational and experiential event designed and coordinated by Kids Korps Teen Korps Entrepreneur Program underwritten by Starbucks. The event is designed to educate all ages about going and living green through an interactive display and on site service project.
The celebration will be held at the pioneering LEED certified Starbucks location at 7625 Linda Vista Road #104 in San Diego on November 15th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. LEED is a third-party organization, which certifies a building or community that uses specific standards to create a better environment for all.
Teen Korps Entrepreneurs will raise awareness for several nonprofit service organizations at the forefront of environmental protection. The event is designed to educate the community through interactive displays, demonstrations, volunteer activities and promotional materials. Interactive displays will focus on a range of environmental issues including: keeping beaches clean, pollution prevention, the effects of urban oil runoff on native species, the impact of food and bottled water on the environment, and materials to start an herb garden in your own kitchen.
Volunteer activities will allow the community to use their hands directly helping others and the environment. Projects will include building bikes for underprivileged youth and creating seed infused clay balls that will be used to restore native plant species to areas of San Diego destroyed by recent wildfires. Entertainment will be provided by artist 2D, a soft hip-hop artist.
Nonprofit organizations that have made these educational displays feasible include SDG&E, San Diego Coast Keepers, Zoological Society of San Diego, California, Center for Sustainable Energy & I Love a Clean San Diego, and Solana Center for Environmental Innovation. Other sponsors that have made this event possible include Starbucks and Smart Center of San Diego.
