Kids Korps Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive
The North County Food Bank is desperately low in stock on the non-perishable foods provided to the disabled and needy of our North County clinics and shelters. Thousands of men, women and children rely on our generosity and surplus. Please consider this simple opportunity to bring relief to the less fortunate. Collection bins will be available for drop off items at the Rancho Santa Fe Community Center from Sunday, Nov 15 to Monday, Nov. 30th. Some of the most needed items include canned tuna, chicken, salmon, stew, chili, soup, fruit; jarred peanut butter and pasta sauce; and boxed mac n cheese, beans, rice, pasta and cereal. Thanks-giving to you! For more information contact Nicole Macaluso at: dovehill@wildmail.com
Kids Korps Teen Entrepreneurs Create a “Green Scene”
On Sunday, November 15th Kids Korps held its very first Green Korps Festival sponsored by SDG&E. In keeping with Kids Korps’ mission to build leaders for life through youth volunteerism, Kids Korps teens planned and implemented this community-based volunteer project through the Teen Korps Entrepreneur Program underwritten by Starbucks. The event was a great success, including a number of interactive activities, and hands on community education about conscious and practical green living.
Along with supporting the event, SDG&E provided attendees with low flow showerheads and five-minute timers to help reduce water use. Visitors were also able to get an upfront look at a convertible Smart Car. The backdrop for the event was a Starbucks that is currently in process to become the first LEED green certified in the county, which means it was built to specific green standards, and complimented the festivities perfectly. A special thanks goes to our Green Korps™ presenting sponsors SDG&E and The Sempra Energy Foundation, as well as our Teen Korps Entrepreneur Program underwriters Starbucks for making this event a reality. We also thank Smart Center of San Diego for supplying the cute and conscious Smart Car.
Our Kids Korps Teen Entrepreneurs worked diligently with nonprofit environmental partner organizations that they selected over the past couple of months to create interactive displays and make the day a success. Each exhibit was unique, informative, well designed and passionately explained by its teen creators. Topics discussed by the teens included carbon emissions created by food transportation, ways companies such as P&G’s Dawn dish soap are saving wildlife, tips on home gardening, and how to keep our beaches and oceans clean. A special thanks to: San Diego Coast Keepers, The Zoological Society of San Diego, The California Center for Sustainable Energy, I Love Clean San Diego, and The Solana Center for Environment Innovation for guiding and working with our teens in the creation of their event displays.
All who attended enjoyed the event and everyone learned something new about being environmentally conscious. Thank you to all who made this day possible.
Solana Santa Fe Resurrects Its Kids Korps Chapter
Solana Santa Fe held its Kids Korps kick off campaign on November 4. Interested newcomers as well as parents already familiar with Kids Korps attended the event. Moms chatted about Kids Korps’ mission of instilling America’s youth with the spirit of giving through community service and the many and varied projects Kids Korps offers. Between snacking on honey crisp apples and popping grapes, the kids got busy with writing letters of support to our military. They embellished their notes (some quite moving with their heartfelt sentiments) with stickers and their own artwork. Beach clean up and animal shelter projects are to follow. Solana Santa Fe is looking forward to a great year of service and making new friends. Those interested in this fabulous organization can contact their school chapter leader.
Pacific Rim Chapter Clears Batiquitos Lagoon of Invasive Plants
By Val DeVilbiss, Pacific Rim Chapter Leader
We had such a fun time at the Batiquitos Lagoon! The group learned a lot from our new friends, Guide Leaders Fred and Juan. They explained the importance of clearing the lagoon areas of large invasive plants and trash. We learned that this is necessary so that vegetation along the lagoon can continue to flourish for future visitors. Not only were we able to work hard at the task at hand but also enjoyed an educational tour. Fred graciously taught us about the birds and other animals which make this marsh habitat their home. We all left appreciating the beautiful nature preserve we’re so lucky to have right here in our back yard.
Thanks again for volunteering! We’re proud of our kids for taking an interest in making our community a better place!
Serving Families at Ronald McDonald House
On November 8, the Sycamore Ridge Kids Korps chapter had a rewarding day serving the families who are residents of the Ronald McDonald House at Rady
Children’s Hospital. The students made cookies, helped serve lunch, and helped clean up the facility as needed.
